The TEF Berkley Fellowship backs researchers tackling hard, unsolved problems with real potential. It offers you a two-year postdoctoral scholarship on premise at UC Berkley paired with attendance to the Berkley Discovery program. You will be part of TEF’s ecosystem and actively support the exchange of ideas and innovation between UC Berkley, TEF and your respective university.

What is the TEF Berkley Fellowship

Europe and Italy produce world-class science. Too little leaves the lab and has real world impact.

The Fellowship funds advanced postdoctoral research in TEF’s priority thematic areas, backing basic research, applied research, and projects with entrepreneurial potential.

It gives young researchers the freedom to build an independent, internationally minded research career, together with real impact on innovation and entrepreneurship. You will be embedded in the TEF ecosystem, have regular check-ins with TEF staff about research progress and take part in virtual and in-person events for innovators. You will be an ambassador for TEF’s vision of building Italy’s new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

The PostDoc fellowship will start in Spring 2027.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for researchers who believe their science can have meaningful impact, are ambitious and want to experience an unique research environment. Fellows feel the urge to make impact happen, in their research, in Italy, in the world.

Applicants submit a research proposal that has strong innovation character, has the potential to make a significant scientific contribution and fosters transfer of knowledge and culture of growth between both continents.

Being part of TEF’s ecosystem is central to this fellowship. Fellows will participate in TEF - Berkley organized events, mentorship activities both as mentor and mentee and actively work towards establishing a mindset of world class innovation and entrepreneurship at their home university.

Eligibility requirements

• Affiliated with Politecnico di Milano or Bocconi University (or a formal TEF Partner institution) in the last 12 months before application.
• Holding a PhD degree or similar education or being expected to finish the degree until January 31st 2027. The end of the PhD program is not more than 12 months before application.
• The applicant will need to supply a motivation letter and two letters of recommendation. One is to be prepared by the PI of the home university supporting the application and presenting the contact point for further collaboration with the home university.
